GIS is becoming a more important tool for land surveyors and their clients. As geospatial data becomes more abundant, data management and analysis skills are critical to producing value. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of GIS and consider when it can be successfully applied in your land surveying practice. The challenges of moving survey data into a GIS are also discussed, which includes important considerations for conversion between CAD and GIS formats. The workshop concludes with a live demonstration of how GIS data can be created from standard surveying products and then analyzed. The demonstration will feature OpenJUMP, an open source vector GIS program for the desktop.
The workshop includes three (3) audience exercises to help you apply what you’ve learned during the workshop.
If you are a land surveyor interested in applying GIS to your practice, but you aren’t sure where to start or when it makes sense, this workshop will get you started.
